Underground lake of Melissani

 

 

In the town of Katavotres that is on the outskirts of the capital of Argostoli, the sea water goes into the ground, into the interior of the island. Thus, the underground river of Kefalonia running across the island is born. Along its way, it forms lakes, some of which have never seen the day light.

 

In the town of Karavomylos, near Sami, the river water returns to the Ionian Sea again.

 

Many years ago, the Melissani Lake formed by this river was hidden from human eyes as well. But the arches of caves overlooking the reservoir collapsed and the sunlight penetrated inside.

 

Currently, there is a tunnel leading to the lake and small boats operated by gondoliers provide an opportunity to explore this natural wonder and enjoy its unique beauty.

 

We advise you to come here around noon, when the sun peeks into the cave and discolours its arches and the water of the Melissani Lake to incredible shades.
