Fortress of Saint George

The ruins of St. George fortress tower over the regions of Argostoli, Omala, and Leivathos. Built in the 12th century by the Byzantines, it was in the hands of the Turks and Venetians, who ruled for a long time on the island.

In the 16th century, the Venetians fortified and reconstructed it by making the fortress an economic, administrative, and cultural centre of Kefalonia - the island capital.

The fortress suffered significant damage during the earthquake in the 17th century. In the second half of the 18th century, the capital was relocated to Argostoli.

For lovers of archaeology, it will probably be interesting to examine the ruins of ancient stone buildings, but it is a pleasure to spend time here not only for seekers of antiquity.

Cute cafes at the foot of the fortress offer coffee, soft drinks, and hot meals. You will not want to leave, because a magnificent view from the terrace will be a wonderful seasoning to the food served.

A snaky road leads from the valley to a high hill, where the fortress is. Climbing up or going down, you can visit the house of a local charismatic artist and buy some of his work to remember.
